Garmin-Asus releases more G60 details, adds M20 Windows phone

After last week’s rollout of plans to re-launch a line-up of Nuvifone smart phones — this time together with Eee maker Asus — GPS specialist Garmin has teamed with its partner on a new Web site for Nuvifone.

As Garmin officials said at a press conference in Taiwan last week, the G60 — a phone now set for introduction at the Mobile World Congress — represents a rebranding of the initial Nuvifone previously planned for announcement in late 2008.

Is the phone now announced identical to the one envisioned earlier, though? Maybe or maybe not. In comparing press releases from January 30, 2008 and on the new Garmin-Asus Web site this week, Betanews found that the descriptions of feature sets overlap but are not completely the same.

Ararat dvd Both press releases say that the flagship phone will offer a 3.5-inch touch display with three primary icons: “Call,” “Search,” and “View Map,” for example. But the information now posted on the new Web site adds that secondary icons on the side of the G60’s home screen are organizable according to the user’s preference, and that the quad-band GSM phone will sport 3.5G HSPDA and Wi-Fi connectivity. Both documents mention preloaded Garmin maps, but the mention of the on-board camera included in the earlier press release is absent from this week’s G60 press release. No operating system is mentioned for the G60, either.

The Windows Mobile-enabled M20, on the other hand, will be a tri-band GSM device with a full-size soft QWERTY keyboard and some of the same connectivity features and on-board software as the G60.

Did the Microsoft CEO really say what the financial press says he said about netbooks and Win7? Not really.

Once again, comments made by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer during an analysts’ briefing two weeks ago are being bandied about by the press as “confirmation” that the company plans to produce a slimmed-down, netbook-ready SKU of Windows 7. However, a complete read of Ballmer’s comments, as transcribed by Microsoft (Word document available here), indicate that this isn’t what Ballmer said at all. In fact, he seemed intentionally vague on the topic, making clear the company was certainly thinking about the prospect of a netbook Win7 SKU, but confirming nothing.

That does assume a few things, one of which being a facility for current netbook owners using XP to hop over Windows Vista altogether — a trade-up which the current Windows 7 betas do not directly offer. As Betanews discovered last month, it is technically possible for an XP user to eventually install Windows 7, though as the beta is currently organized, he does have to install Vista first. He doesn’t have to purchase Vista; in fact, he can install a borrowed copy without registering or activating it prior to starting Win7 setup.

The other assumption Ballmer points to is that a Windows 7 SKU will be available at about $100, which is the average price that XP Home Edition sells for today. This does not mean that a “slimmed down” Windows 7 would sell for around $100; that would assume that a more full-bodied version would be priced more expensively.

Ballmer’s response did not rule out the possibility of a Windows 7 for netbook package or bundle at some future date, perhaps even later than Microsoft’s Win7 premiere. But it didn’t confirm the eventuality of it either.

The misinterpretation of Ballmer’s comments two weeks ago may have been exacerbated after the company’s Business Division President Stephen Elop, during a Morgan Stanley technology conference last week, referred back to Ballmer as perhaps saying more than he did…and then followed up with an exercise in backpedaling that made Harry Potter’s Hagrid seem downright deceptive by comparison.

Elop started by talking about the first netbooks being 80% Linux-based (Word document available here), but shifting toward Windows very rapidly. “Yes, it took some time to get things in order and to get those deals in place, and so forth, but clearly we have a very aggressive mind-set towards ensuring that we’re attaching well to the netbook environment. And that means different things. Steve talked about different SKU opportunities, and so forth, that target netbooks at the discussion last week. So there’s a lot of opportunity there.”

If Microsoft is indeed planning a netbook-specific Windows 7-based SKU, why doesn’t it announce its existence along with all the other buildouts? Because publicizing a “scaled down” Win7 for netbooks emphasizes the need for Win7 to be scaled down in order to fit — a problem which Windows XP doesn’t face.

It’s not the same as letting users say they don’t want it in the first place, but as Microsoft confirms, Windows 7 users will be allowed to tell setup to remove IE8.

A Microsoft Windows 7 group product manager confirmed in an announcement dated last Friday, though which is only making its premiere appearance over the weekend, that in the latest private beta build, users will be able to “turn off” — to use his own phrase for it — a greater number of standard Windows features including Internet Explorer 8.

“If a feature is deselected, it is not available for use. This means the files (binaries and data) are not loaded by the operating system (for security-conscious customers) and not available to users on the computer,” writes Microsoft’s Jack Mayo. “These same files are staged so that the features can easily be added back to the running OS without additional media.” Windows Media Center, Windows Media Player, and Windows Search (4.0) join Internet Explorer 8 and several other features that users will be able to de-select following installation. While the ability to make installed Microsoft features unavailable seems to imply that the company would be capable of offering users the option not to install these features in the first place, Mayo concluded his post by saying the company made an intentional choice to leave the “turn off” option for after setup. Mayo credited user feedback, once again, as the deciding factor.

“We know some have suggested that this set of choices be a ’setup option,’” Mayo wrote. “Some operating systems do provide this type of setup experience. As we balanced feedback, the vast majority of feedback we have received was to streamline setup and to reduce the amount of potential complexity in getting a PC running. We chose to focus this feature on the post-setup experience for Windows 7.”

The notion that Internet Explorer and Windows were irreversibly linked with one another had been used by Microsoft in defense of its “bundling” of the two products, both during the US antitrust action against Microsoft a decade ago and during the recent European Commission complaint last January. And indeed, there remains many elements of shared code — libraries that both Windows UI elements and IE utilize. But as engineers told Betanews as long ago as last October, when Windows 7 was first officially announced, more elements of the operating system’s front end rely on rendering provided by Windows Presentation Foundation, not the HTML rendering engine of IE. So the act of separating the IE front end from the underlying shared components upon which it still relies, may be easier now than before.

The question will inevitably arise, then: Is a Web browser a principal component of an operating system, as Microsoft has argued affirmatively in the past? Like a political appointee telling a Sunday morning talk show host that it’s time to “move on” and focus on what “the people” are more interested in, Mayo dismissed this whole discussion — once the foundation of Microsoft’s defense — as a philosophical tangent that’s not worth arguing any more.

“We don’t want the discussion about this feature or these choices to digress into a philosophical discussion about the definition of an operating system,” writes Mayo, “which is ultimately a challenging exercise (judging by the revision history on the community page), but we do want to improve a feature centered on helping to meet the feedback expressed by some over the summer when this blog started.”

What testers discovering the feature over the weekend have yet to reveal, however, is exactly what happens both during and after the “turning off” process. Specifically, does Windows assist the user in seeking other options for a Web browser? Or does it simply leave the user without one? If it’s the latter case, then the user will probably want to have downloaded the substitute of his choice, prior to the system’s reboot. That may not be as smooth an “experience” as Mayo was alluding to.

But it does seem probable, if not completely clear, that one instigator of this change in Windows policy, in addition to tester feedback, was the EC’s latest objections. The turning off of IE, or at least the ability to make the IE front end not a part of Windows, will nullify any argument Microsoft had left that the operating system and Web browser are intertwined. Giving users an option of other brands’ Web browsers may not be the company’s first choice at this moment, but the likelihood that such an option will appear — if only in European editions — has now substantially increased.

Firefox 3.0.7 addresses maybe more than three security issues

The latest commercial edition of Firefox, version 3.0.7, is said to address three “critical” security issues. But a close look at the list itself shows that a myriad of similar issues were grouped together as one, making the total list of high-level issues as high as six. Four issues with layout engine crashes collectively constituted a single security issue, and the concern here is the possibility — though no proof of concept yet exists — that such crashes could lead to exploitable memory corruptions. Two of the four memory crash issues involve both series 2 and 3 of the browser, and some only occur when certain add-ons are installed. In one case, a layout crash was reported by Firefox contributor Jesse Ruderman that was best recreated with the installation of Quitter.

Firefox 3.1 could catch up to Safari 4 in beta speed duel

With software continuing to get bulkier and less memory-efficient, the need for speed is re-emerging, and Mozilla could very well deliver.

With the next — though probably not the last — public beta of Firefox 3.1, testers outside of Mozilla will get their first chance to see in action perhaps the number-one reason customers would want to upgrade: the browser’s new TraceMonkey JavaScript execution engine. Expectations have been raised quite high over the past several months, as developers have promised orders of magnitude faster execution of functionally-driven Web pages.

But last week, it was Apple that threw down the gauntlet with its public release of a Safari browser beta, for both Mac and Windows, that tore through the speed records for JavaScript in public betas. Right now, it’s Safari 4 that has the provisional pole. Yesterday, however, Mozilla managers instructed developers to start wrapping up their final check-ins, as it’s nearing time for a public release of Firefox 3.1 Beta 3.

This afternoon, Betanews checked the latest nightly internal build of the code being wrapped up for Beta 3, to see if TraceMonkey was going to make its appearance or be delayed until the next round. We gave the latest build of code-name “Shiretoko” a quick qualification test, and you can almost hear the voice of Tom Carnegie now: “An-n-n-nd…he-e-e-e’s on it! “

Our early test results showed that Firefox 3.1 could, at the very least, make up a lot of ground in the rendering department against Safari. It hasn’t passed Safari’s scores just yet, but if the warm-up laps are any indication, Firefox will join Safari in a neck-and-neck battle for the pole.

We put last night’s “Shiretoko” build through the same battery of tests that we gave the latest Safari 4 beta last week, along with production versions of the other major Windows-based browsers: Google Chrome, Opera, and Internet Explorer. We used the same virtual machine running Windows Vista SP1 in Microsoft Virtual PC, running on an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600-based host, that we used in our previous tests. This isn’t exactly a superspeedway, but what’s important here are the relative Death Ride aka Haunted Highway movies speeds, which are more pronounced against one another when using a slower environment.

In the HowToCreate.co.uk CSS rendering benchmark, Shiretoko loaded the test page in 456 ms, and completed the rendering test (at first) in 38 ms. But each successive rendering got faster, thanks probably to memory caching, until eventually Shiretoko was capable of rendering the test in 4 ms. This compared to the Safari 4 beta’s score of 54 ms to load and 7 ms to render. We were able to speed up Safari in successive renders as well, until it too hit 4 ms.

By itself, that delta still looks like a gulf. But Firefox 3.0.6 loaded in 400 ms and rendered in 61 ms. If 3.1 can get closer to that 4 ms score in the final public build, it will have made up some critical ground — and in any event, it will look and feel a whole lot faster to a much broader range of users, at least on the Windows side, than Safari.

In Sean Patrick Kane’s collective JavaScript speed battery, Shiretoko completed the battery in 344 ms, which is 32% faster than Firefox 3.0.6 — not orders of magnitude, but still a good boost. Safari 4 beta’s score stands at 174 ms.

And finally, Shiretoko earns some style points along the way by scoring a 93 on the Web Standards Project’s Acid3 standards compliance test. That’s one of Mozilla’s highest scores there to date, with Firefox 3.0.6 only scoring a 71. Of course, you can’t get any better than Safari 4 beta’s score: a perfect 100.

Nightly builds of any kind of software, including open source, tend to have less optimized code than public beta builds, so Shiretoko’s speed increase could be an indication of a more competitive score from Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 down the road.

Skype unfurls a royalty-free SILK codec

The Secret Garden dvdrip At eComm on Tuesday, Skype announced that it’ll make its SILK wideband codec available royalty-free to third-party developers. The release gives Skype a shot at solidifying its lead in the VoIP race and should increase consumers’ exposure to, and desire for, wideband-quality call quality.

SILK, which debuted to positive reviews in the 4.0 version of Skype for Windows released last month, is Skype’s default audio codec for Skype-to-Skype calls. It scales its bandwidth usage in real time between 6 Kpbs and 40 Kbps, and in “superwideband” (best) mode samples at 24 KHz. Likewise, bit rate scales from 6-40 Kbps as dictated by connection conditions. The data sheet, which includes test results from the Dynastat labs comparing SILK with rival codecs Speex and AMR Wideband, is available as a PDF file. Charts of those test results indicate that SILK managed to maintain relatively high sound quality even at high (10%) levels of packet loss.

Despite scattered grumbling about Skype’s slow rollout of SILK to its very own clients — a Mac version isn’t expected until April — the announcement has been generally received with excitement, as well as questions about whether the SILK release presages greater openness for the service’s core protocols. (SILK does not require Skype’s signaling protocols. In fact, it doesn’t require Skype at all.)

A Microsoft spokesperson kinda, sorta confirmed to Betanews this afternoon the release of “an update to Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2 testers, in an effort to gain additional feedback.” The company appears to be officially declining to call it a release candidate, although Ars Technica’s Emil Protalinski unearthed evidence yesterday that this is exactly what it is.

Whatever it is, SP2 for both the client and server operating systems should include “rollups” of security hotfixes issued since last March.

While the Microsoft spokesperson told us that the company is continuously engaging with its partners and developers, there’s a distinct lack of chatter about Build 6002 — widely believed to be the first RC build — on the TechNet Forums where testers using Microsoft Connect generally gather. A few exceptions were recent posts from testers having trouble uninstalling their existing SP2 builds, which is what they would want to do first before installing the latest builds. Most likely, a select group of testers is officially receiving this build now, and the broader-based Connect group will be made aware later.

In early tests a few weeks ago, Cameron Wilmot and the folks at TweakTown got an early peek at Build 6002, and their performance results were actually not very impressive at all. Though load times did improve for some tests, and frame rates for rendering a few games like Crysis improved dramatically — sometimes more than double — overall performance scores like PCMark Vantage were actually marginally slower for Build 6002 over Vista SP1 — by less than one percent.

Verizon names partners in LTE development

Partners in Verizon’s most recently announced LTE deployment will include hardware vendors Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent, packet core vendor Starent Networks, and IMS partner Nokia Siemens.

Verizon Executive Vice President and CTO Dick Lynch has been vocally supporting the 4G standard LTE (Long Term Evolution) for two years, and only two months ago said LTE services could begin by December of this year. In Barcelona today, Lynch discussed Verizon’s LTE deployment plans, which more realistically anticipate construction to begin in 2010. Verizon’s plans for LTE include IMS-based converged applications and services by Nokia Siemens and Alcatel-Lucent. IMS stands for IP Multimedia Subsystem, an infrequently used framework designed for delivering multimedia content over wireless networks.

The company’s joint partner in Verizon Wireless, Vodafone, has been joining Verizon for LTE field tests in the United States, Hungary, Germany, and Spain; and Verizon expects to expand the tests in the US with its fresh 700 MHz spectrum. The consortium seeks to create a seamless steaming media environment which will exploit not only IMS that Verizon has chosen, but also service aware IP networks like IP/MPLS.
